Post-Conference Workshop: Open the Door to Tai Chi
Dianne Bailey
Tai Chi is one of the most evidenced-based forms of exercise that provides numerous benefits to the aging population. The Open the Door to Tai Chi system teaches trainers the basics of Tai Chi, the underlying principles of Tai Chi and provides instruction for teaching Tai Chi as a form of exercise. The medical community is recommending Tai Chi to their patients and trainers need to add this as an offering to their class selection.

Participants will be introduced to Tai Chi and learn why it is an important exercise modality for the aging population. They will learn some Tai Chi movements in addition to discovering the many benefits Tai Chi can offer their clients. They will learn how to incorporate Tai Chi into their personal training/group class offerings.

This one-day workshop teaches the attendees all of the individual moves of the Yang style 24 short form of Tai Chi and teaches them how to put these moves together into the flow of the form. Attendees also learn the 8 underlying principles of Tai Chi which drive the benefits and how to incorporate these principles as they teach Tai Chi. Dianne Bailey, the creator of the Open the Door to Tai Chi system instructs the entire workshop and provides individual feedback to each participant regarding their understanding of Tai Chi.

The population of older adults is exploding and they want to continue to work, travel and play for as long as possible. Traditional “senior” exercise programs are somewhat beneficial but they do not maximize functional ability which is so crucial in later life. In this workshop you will learn innovative exercise strategies, techniques and movements for clients over the age of 50 that have been shown to be critical to functional aging. Through lecture and hands-on learning you will develop the knowledge and skills to perform functional fitness assessments and create functional exercise programs for a wide variety of older clients. Become the “go to” expert in your community for training mature adults. Attendees will have access to the Functional Aging Specialist online learning modules, some of which will need to be completed prior to attending the event. ActivMotion: Balance in the real world is SO much more than we think! Our living environment is ever changing. Forces such as gravity, acceleration, deceleration and momentum are constantly pushing and pulling our center of mass in different directions as we move through space. Additionally, our senses play a key role in providing us with much needed biofeedback that we use to determine spacial orientation.

For the most transferable and useable functional balance training, exercises need to challenge the body in ways that simulate the forces and variability that life throws at us everyday. Additionally, we need to ignite the body and mind in the process by integrating senses like touch, vision and sound into the picture. This allows us to heighten awareness and develop a deeper understanding of what balance really is relative to our position in space.

In this session, we will introduce and explore new science-backed approaches to how we can truly help our aging population replace fear with confidence and live life stronger everyday.

DOD Fitness: How many of your clients complain about pain from arthritis, old injuries or joint replacements while exercising?
